Edible cities: transforming vacant urban spaces into green jobs for NEET youth
Edible cities project promotes the transformation of urban spaces into food-producing ecosystems where cultivation, processing, distribution, and consumption take place close to communities. Based on the edible city model as a nature-based solution, the project combines environmental sustainability, social inclusion, and economic innovation. It supports biodiversity, reduces food waste and supply chain impacts, and enhances urban resilience through local food production. At the same time, it creates opportunities for entrepreneurship, skills development, and community participation, particularly for young people and disadvantaged groups. Aligned with key European priorities such as the New European Bauhaus and the EU Vision for Agriculture and Food, the project aims to foster greener, more inclusive, and economically vibrant cities while opening new pathways to education, employment, and the green economy for young people, including NEETs.
Project goals (GOs):
GO1. Developing a coaching technique for youth leaders that connects sustainable and creative practices with edible cities.
GO2. Increasing the attractiveness of edible city jobs and youth-led green entrepreneurship.
GO3. Increasing opportunities in the urban green economy and promoting participation of disadvantaged youth.
GO4. Giving young people a voice in shaping policies and practices related to edible cities and youth integration.
Target groups:
- Young people aged 15–29, especially NEETs (not in education, employment, or training) and those facing vulnerable conditions.
- Youth leaders, trainers, educators, and mentors working with young people.
- Professionals from fields such as psychology, pedagogy, social work, urban agriculture, entrepreneurship, and creative industries.
- Organisations supporting youth employability, sustainability, and community engagement.
- Local communities and stakeholders involved in edible city and green economy initiatives.
