Roots&Routes: Youth Archiving Europe’s Migration Memories
Roots&Routes brings young people together with community members to document migration and minority histories that are often missing from public memory. The project focuses on the experiences of Roma, People of African Descent (PAD), migrant and LGBTIQ communities. Through oral history, intergenerational dialogue, podcasts, films and exhibitions, young people will take an active role in recording, interpreting and sharing these stories.
Across Belgium, Greece, Spain, Slovakia, Austria and Italy, the project will train young people and community multipliers in oral history and digital storytelling. Local testimonies will be connected through QR Story Trails and a European QR Story Map. Community events, a museum exhibition, a creative festival and a final policy dialogue will bring these histories to wider audiences and connect local memories with the European remembrance agenda.
Project goals (GOs):
GO1. Uncovering and safeguarding hidden community histories by documenting testimonies from Roma, PAD, migrant and LGBTIQ communities.
GO2. Empowering young people as authors of remembrance by training them in oral history, podcasting, digital storytelling and curation.
GO3. Creating intergenerational and intercultural dialogue between young people, elders and community members around migration, persecution, identity and resilience.
GO4. Connecting local memories with a shared European narrative through QR Story Trails, museum activities and the European QR Story Map.
GO5. Promoting inclusive and participatory remembrance in youth work, education and civil society through reusable training materials and project outputs.
Target groups:
Young people aged 18–30, with particular attention to Roma, People of African Descent, migrant and LGBTIQ youth.
Elders and community memory holders involved in intergenerational storytelling and testimony collection.
Youth workers, educators, trainers, community leaders and other multipliers.
Cultural and remembrance institutions, including museums, libraries, archives and cultural centres.
Policymakers, equality bodies, municipalities and other public institutions working on remembrance, inclusion and anti-discrimination.
The wider public reached through exhibitions, festivals, podcasts, films and QR Story Trails.
